PPE computer vision Australia — compliance-first site safety

PPE detection computer vision for Australian industrial and construction sites means cameras that check whether required protective equipment is present in designated zones — hard hats, hi-vis, gloves, glasses — and raise reviewable events. It is site-safety tooling, not soft-pedalled facial recognition or workplace biometrics by default.

Commercial shape: computer vision →, property AI development → and AI hardware & edge →.

Compliance-first framing (Australia)

WHS duties, site induction and contractor management already set expectations about PPE. Camera AI should reinforce those rules with clear purpose, retention and human review — not surprise workers with identity matching dressed up as “safety”.

  • State the purpose in plain language before cameras go live.
  • Limit retention to what the safety process needs; delete what you do not need.
  • Prefer zone and class detection (PPE present/absent) over face matching.
  • Keep humans in the loop for enforcement decisions and disputes.

Industrial and site cameras — what they detect

  • Required PPE classes in gated zones (entries, plant floors, exclusion areas).
  • Missing or incorrect gear events with timestamped clips for supervisors.
  • Optional pairing with exclusion-zone or vehicle-proximity rules where scoped.
  • Edge processing so continuous video stays on-site by default.

This is the same industrial-camera family as continuous machine monitoring — different success tests. See industrial camera AI Australia →.

What we do not soft-pedal

Facial recognition and biometric workforce monitoring are a different product class with a harder lawful-basis and consultation path. If a brief quietly assumes face matching to “prove who skipped PPE”, call that out early — design PPE detection without it unless the client has a clear, documented need and process.

  • Default: class/zone detection + human review.
  • Specialised path: identity only when purpose, notice and controls are explicit.
  • Never market PPE vision as covert people-scoring.

Buyer checklist

  • Map zones and PPE rules already in site procedures — do not invent new policy in code.
  • Decide edge vs cloud for video before a vendor demo — see edge vs cloud →.
  • Define who receives alerts and what happens on false positives.
  • Write retention, access and staff messaging into Scope.
